The Write Stuff Agency Turns 6
Today is The Write Stuff Agency’s 6th birthday.
Admittedly it’s also the first blog post up here in a while. I am the proverbial shoemaker’s child.
Every year on this day I like to post a few lessons, and that’s certainly one. Most of my clients aren’t blogging not because they don’t want to, but because they’re simply too busy.
As irksome as it is to admit that I’ve fallen into the same trap at times, I think I’m equally guilty. If nothing else, I understand, and believe me I empathize.
But I also understand what happens when you get sidetracked by being ‘too busy.’ Eventually you won’t be that busy at all! The biggest household brands keep advertising because they know that out of sight eventually means out of mind.
So here I am.
This time last year I was working with my business coach to set the word of the year. We landed on ‘generosity.’ Here’s why:
Your content is a gift
If you’ve ever read content done badly, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Badly written content isn’t there to give anybody anything!
It’s not there to inform your audience, or to engage anyone. No one walks away from badly written copy with any actual takeaways that they remember.
Content that isn’t done well is doing little more than taking up space. Automated or not, it’s drivel that’s really not helpful across the board.
So how can content be generous?
You have so much knowledge within your business, and within your industry. Well-written content gives you the chance to share that knowledge effectively.
You don’t need to give it all away up front! If you’re a lawyer for example, no one should ever walk away from reading your blog post thinking they should represent themselves in court. For accountants, no one should read your newsletter and think they can handle their own complicated taxes! That’s not what it’s about.
Sharing your knowledge in small doses lets you do a few key things:
- Content shows what you know. Telling people that you’re the expert in your field is only going to go so far. Instead, use written content to show the extent of your knowledge.
- Content welcomes your audience in. Written content doesn’t just show that you know something, but how you can explain it to someone else. It’s one thing to have a bulleted list of your services or products on your website. Explaining in a really accessible way to your audience how they work takes your digital presence to the next level.
- Content helps with issue spotting. You probably think that your future clients know when they need you. Spoiler: they don’t. When you write something accessibly, they can see themselves in those same situations and think “I could use this product” or “that sounds a lot like me!” They’ll not only recognize their own need, but they’ll see that you’re the business that can help.
How can The Write Stuff Agency help?
If content is the gift that you give to your audience, then I’m here to be that elf.
If I’m too busy to write my own blogs and newsletters, then you’re definitely too busy to do it! I know because I’m so busy writing yours!
All kidding aside, your digital presence is as important today as any other part of your marketing or growth strategy. Your website and blogs and newsletters form the crux of your online presence. You can also use longer-form pieces like eBooks, white papers, and other gated content to really engage your readers while bringing them into your business.
If you’re too busy, or don’t know where to start, I’m here to help. Set up a call today and let’s see how we can work together.
